After more than forty years practicing nutritional and functional medicine, I have come to one conclusion:

Time during which inflammation continued damaging your arteries. Time during which insulin resistance progressed toward diabetes. Time during which oxidative stress continued affecting your brain. Time during which your joints, mitochondria, immune system, and cardiovascular system continued to decline.

Money can be replaced. Lost health often cannot.

That is why choosing supplement quality is one of the most important investments you can make.

Why Supplement Quality Determines Whether a Product Works

One of the greatest misconceptions consumers have is believing that all supplements containing the same ingredient are essentially identical.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

A supplement’s effectiveness depends upon numerous factors:

Throughout my career I have learned that marketing and medicine ask very different questions.

Marketing asks: “What’s selling?”

Medicine asks: “What has human research shown actually works?”

Marketing asks: “How inexpensive can we manufacture this?”

Medicine asks: “Would I confidently recommend this product to my own family?”

That philosophy guides every recommendation I make to my patients. Results matter. Not advertising. Not celebrity endorsements. Not flashy packaging. Clinical outcomes matter.

Why Ingredient Form Matters

Take magnesium as an example.

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions throughout the human body. It supports muscle function, sleep, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, nerve transmission, and energy production.

Yet many inexpensive supplements use magnesium oxide because it is substantially less expensive than highly absorbable forms such as magnesium glycinate. Unfortunately, magnesium oxide has poor intestinal absorption. When someone takes an ineffective form for months without benefit, they often conclude: “Magnesium doesn’t work.”

The truth is very different. Magnesium works. The wrong product failed.

The same principle applies to omega-3 oils, probiotics, botanical extracts like curcumin, CoQ10, and many other vitamins and minerals where formulation and bioavailability determine clinical effectiveness.

Over the past two decades, the supplement industry has changed dramatically. Many respected companies founded by physicians, scientists, or entrepreneurs have been purchased by large investment groups or private equity firms.

There is nothing inherently wrong with business growth. However, when quarterly financial performance becomes the primary objective, pressure naturally develops to reduce manufacturing costs, simplify formulations, source less expensive raw materials, or reduce quality-control testing.

The bottle often looks exactly the same. The formula inside may not.
